For the month of September, I am happy to introduce the first poet to be interviewed by The Modern Folio. Marie Davis gets real with the challenges she has faced and overcome in her book of poems and stories, Unforgettable Memories: A Journey Through Life.

The Writer
Paige: Where are you from?
Marie: I’m from Freehold, New Jersey.
Paige: How long have you been writing?
Marie: I’ve been writing for one year.
Paige: What does writing mean to you personally?
Marie: Poetry is therapy for me. I enjoy the rhymes and free verse. Hoping that someone will benefit from my writings and enjoy them.
Paige: Were there any authors or books that shaped you early on?
Marie: I love American memoirist and essayist Maya Angelou’s poems and books.
Paige: What does a perfect writing day look like for you?
Marie: Perfect writing for me looks like an enjoyable, nice, cool morning outdoors.

The Work
Paige: Tell us about your latest/upcoming release.
Marie: [The] book release for “Unforgettable Memories: A Journey Through Life” was August 20, 2026, and I’m just thrilled about it. The book consists of poems and stories about my journey through life. Another successful goal accomplished.
Paige: What inspired this particular story?
Marie: I was able to release memories that consist of challenges that I’ve been through in my journey.
Paige: What do you hope readers take away from this book?
Marie: Whatever challenges they may be going through in their journey, they can still survive no matter how long it takes.
Paige: What sentence from your own writing are you most proud of?
Marie: Whatever challenges you’re going through in life, you can still be successful no matter how long it takes.
Paige: What part of the writing/publishing process has been most rewarding?
Marie: The completion of my second book has been most rewarding. A lot of time was involved. Never thought I would have two books published.
Final Words
Paige: What genres or themes draw you in most?
Marie: Poetry and nonfiction.
Paige: Is there a dream project you hope to write someday?
Marie: Not at this time.
Paige: What literary world would you love to visit?
Marie: [The] American Writer’s Museum in Chicago, Illinois. [It] houses permanent and temporary online exhibits.
Paige: What advice would you give aspiring writers?
Marie: Take your time. Whatever thoughts that you have, jot them down immediately. Make sure the poems are your poems and not like anyone else’s. Be you.
Paige: What can readers look forward to from you next?
Marie: I submitted a poem to the COVID-19 Memorial Monument in Chicago, Illinois, and it was selected. I will be attending an event for the COVID victims and poets.
Paige: Is there anything else you would like to share about yourself or your experience as a writer?
