Why This Blog Exists
This blog was created for readers and writers to gather and appreciate literature beyond surface-level enjoyment. It is a place to slow down and notice how a novel is built – the architecture beneath it, the emotional structure, and the careful craft of language, pacing, and plot working together to form something that can engage both the mind and the heart. A novel is not accidental. It is constructed with intention. Every choice – every sentence, silence, and shift in perspective – contributes to the experience of the story as a whole. This blog exists to honor that craft.
On Storytelling and Subjectivity
One of the most important principles I hold as a reader is that literature is deeply subjective. A story is not universally “good” or “bad” in any fixed sense. Instead, it is experienced differently depending on the reader, their perspective, and even the season of life they are in. What resonates deeply with one person may feel distant to another, and both responses are valid. Because of this, I approach every book with curiosity rather than judgment.
My Approach to Reviews
Instead of reducing books to simple ratings or binary judgments, I focus on understanding what a story is doing well. My goal is to identify the strengths of a book – its voice, structure, themes, emotional impact, and narrative style – and consider what kind of reader it might resonate with most.
Rather than asking, “Is this a good book?” I ask:
- What is this book doing well?
- What experience does it offer?
- What kind of reader would feel at home in this story?
From there, I frame my reviews as recommendations based on reader experience rather than simple evaluation or personal taste.
My Rating System (Five Elements of Craft)
When I assign a star rating, it is not based on overall preference alone, but on five core elements of storytelling craft. Each category represents one star.
★ Thematic Depth
How meaningfully the story explores its core ideas beneath the surface narrative. Strong thematic work feels layered, intentional, and emotionally or intellectually resonant.
★ Narrative Structure & Pacing
How effectively the story is constructed and unfolds over time. This includes plot cohesion, pacing, tension, and whether the structure supports the book’s intended impact.
★ Character Depth & Development
How fully realized and emotionally believable the characters are. This considers motivation, complexity, growth, and authenticity within the story world.
★ Language & Stylistic Craft (Syntax / Voice)
How intentionally and effectively the book is written at the sentence level. This includes voice, rhythm, imagery, clarity, and how the writing style enhances the reading experience.
★ Literary Devices & Storytelling Technique
How skillfully the author uses tools such as symbolism, metaphor, narrative perspective, foreshadowing, and structure to deepen meaning and enrich the story.
Each strong category earns one star, for a total out of five.
This system is not meant to reduce a book to numbers, but to recognize the different layers that make a story work. A lower score does not diminish a book’s value; it simply reflects which elements were most present in my personal reading experience.
Genre Experience & Openness
While I am open to reading across many genres, my experience is still growing in certain areas. I approach each book with curiosity rather than expectation, especially when stepping into genres that are less familiar to me.
Some categories I have had limited exposure to include (but are not limited to) romance-focused novels, autobiographies, memoirs, and self-help style books. I remain open to exploring these areas over time, particularly when a story is thoughtfully written or widely recommended. However, my responses may reflect an evolving familiarity as I continue to engage with these genres and understand their conventions more deeply.
Because my engagement with certain types of content is guided by a focus on literary and thematic depth, I do not seek out or review works where the primary focus of sexual content is for arousal or erotic entertainment. I am, however, open to books that include sexual themes when they serve a broader narrative purpose, such as character development, thematic exploration, or literary context.
As with all books I read, I may not finish every title (DNF) if it does not resonate with me. This is always a reflection of personal reading experience rather than a judgment of the book’s value.
AI Policy
The Modern Folio is dedicated to supporting authors and the craft of writing. As such, I do not review books, stories, articles, or other literary works that are wholly or partially generated by artificial intelligence.
This policy applies to the creative content itself, including manuscripts, stories, poetry, and other written works. It does not apply to the use of artificial intelligence as a supplemental tool for tasks such as research, brainstorming, proofreading, grammar and punctuation assistance, formatting, cover design, marketing materials, or other publishing-related support.
Because authors use a wide range of tools throughout the writing and publishing process, determinations will be made at my discretion based on the information available. If a work is found to contain substantial AI-generated creative content, it may be declined for review or removed from consideration.
Reading Formats & Accessibility
I primarily engage with books in written form, including physical books, eBooks, and digital reading platforms. This format allows me to slow down and fully engage with language and structure.
At this time, I do not include audiobook listening in my review process. I find that my attention and comprehension are strongest when I can see and interact directly with the text, and all reviews on this blog are based on written formats only. This may evolve over time, but written text remains the foundation of how I currently experience and review books.
Posting & Turnaround Policy
Most books are read and reviewed within approximately one to two weeks of being accepted for review. However, due to the volume of requests received, completed reviews may not appear on the blog immediately. Publication may take several weeks or, in some cases, several months depending on the current review queue and editorial calendar. The Modern Folio reserves the right to determine publication timing based on scheduling needs and content priorities. The intention behind this approach is to preserve the integrity of both reading and reflection. Reviews are not produced under pressure, but are allowed the time needed to form a thoughtful and honest response to each story.
A Final Note
Every book meets its reader differently.
These reviews are not final judgments, but reflections of my experience with a story, offered as an invitation for readers to discover whether that same story might speak to them in their own way.
